Artists and arts organisations from across the country are joining forces for a new national day of giving to the arts. &nbsp;AusArt Day, taking place on&nbsp;23 October, invites all Australians to show their support for artists and arts organisations by making a donation – big or small, to support the creativity they love.&nbsp;

More than 100 artists and arts organisations have already signed up to take part in the inaugural celebration.&nbsp;

From a DJ livestream to a First Nations choir and a coffee cabaret, participants are preparing innovative campaigns that will raise important funds and awareness of the contribution that arts and creativity make to our communities.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Creative Australia is proudly supporting AusArt Day, contributing $500,000 in microgrants upfront, alongside resources, workshops, and advertising materials to help participants prepare fundraising campaigns.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Artists and organisations can join AusArt Day by signing up&nbsp;<a href="https://creative.gov.au/partnerships-philanthropy/fundraising-support/national-giving-day-to-the-arts#REGO" target="_blank">here</a>. Creative Australia has today announced a new two-year initiative that aims to strengthen the role of the arts in health and community care, helping to improve&nbsp;wellbeing and support stronger, more socially connected communities.

The launch today of the Creative Health Alliance Australia coincides with&nbsp;National Loneliness Awareness Week (4-10 August), offering a timely and&nbsp;positive&nbsp;response to the need to&nbsp;reduce loneliness and strengthen social connection.

The initiative brings together partners from&nbsp;the&nbsp;Foundation for Social Health and leading researchers from the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI) Justice Health Group to lay the foundations for national creative health infrastructure, delivering new tools, support structures and standards to recognise the vital role of creative practitioners in supporting individual and community wellbeing.

Creative Australia initiated the partnership in response to strong demand from the sector and growing evidence of the value of creative health.

Creative Australia CEO Adrian Collette AM said:

“There is growing national and international recognition of the role the arts can play in supporting health and wellbeing.&nbsp;This initiative builds on that momentum, supporting the practitioners already doing this work so they can reach more people and build stronger more connected communities.”

The two-year partnership will work to deliver:&nbsp;

A co-designed national quality framework for creative health.&nbsp;A practitioner-facing badge system and toolkit based on the quality framework.&nbsp;A searchable database of creative health practitioners.&nbsp;Peer mentoring, residencies, and training for creative health workers.&nbsp;A robust three-tier fundraising strategy (government, philanthropy, self-generating).&nbsp;Sustainable long-term stewardship and coalition-building across clinical, cultural, and community sectors.&nbsp;

Honi Soit, the student newspaper at the University of Sydney, has released the complete program for its national Student Journalism Conference (a.k.a. Stujocon).

Stujocon will be held at the University of Sydney from 15-18 August.&nbsp;

Recently announced events include workshops on graphic design, creating student media and zine-making, as well as interviews with speakers including Will Glasgow, Melina Marchetta, Max Chalmers, (A)manda Parkinson, and Cassie Derrick. Additionally, there will be a plenary to debate student media and its role in Australian journalism and politics.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Print copies of the 20-page program are available at the University of Sydney campus at&nbsp;Honi Soit&nbsp;newspaper stands.&nbsp;

Over 70 Australian artists, producers and composers will undertake career-defining activities around the world, backed by investment through Music Australia’s Export Development Fund.

The fifth round of the Export Development Fund sees $997,787.95 invested in 78 projects, involving a range of artists;&nbsp;from solo acts to bands, producers, composers and songwriters to support headline tours, debut showcase performances, artist residencies, publicity campaigns and more.

This July, the Australian Festival of Chamber Music in Townsville-Gurambilbarra will bring them all together in one gloriously dramatic, harmony-breaking showdown:&nbsp;Duelling Composers: Staves Drawn!

We all know the Rolling Stones vs. The Beatles and Oasis vs. Blur. But how about&nbsp;Tchaikovsky&nbsp;calling&nbsp;Brahms&nbsp;a “conceited mediocrity”? Or Brahms famously dozing off during&nbsp;Liszt’s&nbsp;epic sonata? The egos were enormous, the talent even more so.

One hated the other's symphonies. The other probably didn’t notice. Tchaikovsky once said of Brahms:&nbsp;"It angers me that this conceited mediocrity is regarded as a genius."&nbsp;Brahms once fell asleep during one of Liszt’s performances.

Both French, both brilliant, both accused of copying each other. Critics often mistook their work, much to their mutual frustration. Ravel once said, “Debussy's music is a beautiful sunset mistaken for dawn.”

Fuelled by legend and Hollywood, the drama between these two has sparked centuries of speculation.

From 20 May to 1 June 2025, SOL Gallery in Fitzroy will host&nbsp;The Power of Choice, a powerful and deeply human photographic exhibition by&nbsp;award-winning photojournalist Julian Kingma, who has turned his lens toward one of society’s most profound and rarely documented subjects: the lives of terminally ill people who have chosen Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD).

The&nbsp;official opening night&nbsp;will take place on&nbsp;Wednesday 21 May, with Kingma in attendance alongside&nbsp;Go Gentle Australia’s founder Andrew Denton&nbsp;to speak about the project and the remarkable individuals who entrusted Kingma and Go Gentle with their stories.

Two years in the making,&nbsp;The Power of Choice&nbsp;is a first-of-its-kind exhibition in Australia, and perhaps globally, offering a compassionate and unflinching look at people facing death on their own terms.

Kingma, known for his emotionally resonant portraiture and decades of work in editorial photography, has created an exhibition that is as thought-provoking as it is humane.

“This is not an exhibition about death—it’s about dignity, autonomy, and love,” says Kingma.

“These are stories of courage, acceptance and clarity. The individuals and families I photographed weren’t asking us to feel sorry for them —they were asking to be seen.”

The exhibition, based on Kingma’s book by the same name, invites public conversation on the still-contentious topic of VAD, presenting the humanity behind a decision that remains taboo for many.

With care, honesty, and artistic vision,&nbsp;Kingma offers a space for reflection and empathy, challenging us to engage with end-of-life choices in a more open way—and to ask, perhaps for the first time, ‘What constitutes a good death?

A digital comic series co-designed by RMIT students, educators and violence prevention experts will challenge online disinformation and harmful narratives that particularly target young men.

The&nbsp;Adventures of Soy Boy and Friends&nbsp;follows a team of fictional characters as they navigate the challenges of university life, one algorithm and creditable source at a time.

The designs were created by&nbsp;RMIT graduate Millie&nbsp;Ovenden, from a series of engagements with male students and experts.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rmit.edu.au/about/our-values/respect-rmit/gender-equity-and-justice/soy-boy" target="_blank">first edition of the comic</a>, coinciding with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rmit.edu.au/students/student-life/events/annual/respect-week" target="_blank">Respect at Uni Week</a>, explores real students’ lived experience of the pressures that some young men feel when fake news becomes truth amongst their peers and in their classrooms.

Applications are&nbsp;<a href="https://www.afcm.com.au/discover/education/discover/education/afcm-winterschool/" target="_blank">NOW OPEN</a>&nbsp;for young and emerging musicians (individuals and in ensembles) from across the country to register for the Australian Festival of Chamber Music’s (AFCM) International Masterclasses Program, led by music maker, clarinettist, chamber musician, collaborator and educator&nbsp;Lloyd van’t Hoff, who is a past ABC Symphony Australia Young Performer of the Year.

Held in Townsville-Gurambilbarra in North Queensland from 18 July - 1 August, before and during the AFCM, the International Masterclasses program is an immersive experience for young chamber musicians, offering direct mentorship from world-class artists, chamber music training, and professional development opportunities through lessons, public and private masterclasses, and performances, while also providing industry insights from leading musicians and arts professionals.

Program highlights include individual lessons from artists including&nbsp;AFCM Artistic Director Jack Liebeck&nbsp;(violin),&nbsp;Ana-Maria Vera&nbsp;(piano) and&nbsp;Lloyd Van't Hoff&nbsp;(clarinet), group instrumental classes and coaching sessions led by AFCM artists and faculty members, interactive group discussions and review sessions in the Chamber Music Forum, professional development seminars from industry experts, individual career guidance from mentors, public Masterclass participation and a final showcase performance – the International Masterclasses Concert at the Townsville Civic Theatre. Through support from the Ian Potter Foundation, limited funding is available to assist with participation costs, on application.

"The Lady or the Tiger?" is a rock and roll fable set in a mythical barbarian kingdom, which explores the fickleness of love. "Passionella" is based on Jules Feiffer's offbeat Cinderella-story about a chimney sweep whose dreams of being a "glamorous movie star" nearly sabotage her one chance for true love.

Music Australia has announced the recipients of the Record Label Development Scheme, a groundbreaking initiative which aims to support Australian labels actively nurturing and promoting Australian talent.

The $1,732,000 investment will support 23 record labels, varying from local independents to major label Australian subsidiaries, for the creation of new professional recordings, digital content and artwork, marketing and promotional campaigns, production, manufacturing and freight, artist development and staffing.

In addition to supporting labels, the artists featured in the project activities will also receive support through a mandatory non-recoupable 10% artist creation fee. Record labels are also incentivised to manufacture using environmentally sustainable materials, guided by Green Music Australia’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.greenmusic.org.au/productstewardship" target="_blank">Sound Country: A Green Guide on Physical Music Products</a>.

Director of Music Australia Millie Millgate&nbsp;said:&nbsp;

“This direct investment into Australian record labels will see a minimum of 83 Australian acts benefit, creating a domino effect of support, that reinforces the interconnected nature of the contemporary music ecosystem.&nbsp;The role record labels play in developing their artists is significant and we need to safeguard them at a time when breaking Australian artists has never been harder.”

The Record Label Development Scheme will ensure Australian labels of all sizes, and with different genre focusses, can continue to compete effectively, support their artists, and contribute intrinsic value&nbsp;to a vibrant Australian music landscape.
