Sales marketing staff is a popular job that is essential for all businesses. The term ‘sales marketing’ itself refers to business activities to promote products or services and get revenue through various channels.  

Sales and marketing are different things. Marketing aims to improve awareness and create a good image. Meanwhile, sales aim to increase revenue and retain existing customers. 

However, as those two functions align, many companies combine both. That is why sales marketing staff and managers exist.

Every company needs a qualified sales marketing team that consists of qualified staff. To be a sales marketing staff, one must master these skills. 

1. Communication  

Good communication skills can help a salesperson provide a clear explanation about a product or service, whether it is to other teams or potential customers. This skill will comfort the potential customers, which increases their tendency to make purchases.  

2. Time Management 

People in the sales marketing team need to manage time properly because they have many things to do. Start from marketing planning, working with the PR team to get wider visibility, product selling, until providing post-purchase service to retain existing customers. The sales marketing team has to allocate the right duration for each task to meet the deadline. 

3. Product Knowledge 

During product or service offerings and dealing with customers, a salesperson has to understand the product or service deeply. The potential customers may ask about its advantages and disadvantages, which must be answered properly.  

4. Active Listening 

Next, a sales marketing staff also has to actively listen to the potential and existing customers. Sometimes before making a purchase, they need to discuss and this is when they tell the sales marketing staff about their doubt, anxiety, etc. The sales marketing staff has to actively listen to provide the right answer and outcome. 

5. Negotiation 

From time to time, a salesperson may need to negotiate with customers or vendors. During a negotiation, the salesperson needs to stay calm and explain the consideration carefully until a win-win solution is found.

3. Build the Strategy 

After analyzing the market and the competitor, it is time to build a solid sales and marketing strategy. Building a strategy may involve a few people, otherwise the manager will be overwhelmed. Sometimes it even involves the whole team. 

Make sure to build a realistic strategy and set the reachable KPIs. It is also recommended to utilize digitalization in the campaign.  

4. Implement the Strategy 

After building a solid strategy, the sales marketing staff has to implement it properly. Start from running the campaign, seeking the customer, offering the product or service, and providing post-sales service to increase customer loyalty.  

5. Create a Report  

Sales marketing staff also have to create a simple report about their activity, including the campaign reach, how many times they offered, and how many customers they got.
