SINGAPORE, 1 September 2026 – Design WAH! 2026 is bringing renewed attention to a question that matters for the next generation of designers based in Singapore: what does it take for an original creative idea to become an intellectual property (IP) asset that others can recognise, evaluate and work with?

Held from 13 to 15 August 2026 at Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Design WAH! returned for its second edition, curated by FLAsia x Creativeans and presented within FLAsia Singapore. The official 2026 directory featured 15 exhibitor profiles representing creators and educational institutions based in Singapore, including Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Nanyang Polytechnic and MAGES Institute of Excellence. Their presentations ranged from character-led worlds and illustrations to design concepts with the potential to extend into products, content and brand collaborations.

The 2026 edition was supported by HOVARLAY, Moxmonsters, CREUSE, dan Stickermart.

From a creative portfolio to a commercial proposition

For an emerging designer, producing strong work is only one part of the journey. Commercial readiness also depends on whether the core asset is clearly defined, its ownership and relevant forms of protection are understood, its visual and narrative system is consistent, and potential partners can see how it may be used across suitable formats. Depending on the work, those formats may include merchandise, publishing, animation, digital content, campaigns, experiences or co-branded products.

Placing emerging design IP inside a licensing marketplace changes the conversation. A portfolio can show creative ability; an IP proposition must also help a brand owner, buyer or licensor understand the audience, the distinctive assets, the possible applications and the boundaries of a collaboration. Design WAH! is positioned at this early commercialisation stage, where visibility and a shared language can help creators and industry participants begin more informed discussions.

The broader economic context makes this capability increasingly relevant. The Intellectual Property Office of Singapore has reported that IP-rights-intensive industries generate more than one-third of Singapore’s economic activity and account for one in five jobs. While that figure covers the wider IP economy rather than design IP alone, it highlights the importance of helping creative talent understand how intangible assets can be protected, presented and developed.

“The opportunity is not only to help emerging designers create good work, but to help them articulate what they own, how the idea can grow across relevant formats, and why a commercial partner should care. Design WAH! also gives business owners a clearer way to identify relevant applications, evaluate fit and begin a more focused conversation. It creates a place for both sides to explore that potential without asking designers to lose the originality that makes their work valuable.”

Creating value for creators and businesses

Commercialisation requires more than design effort. Creators may need legal and IP guidance, brand development, production knowledge, distribution, marketing and licensing expertise. Schools, industry platforms and businesses can help emerging designers understand these disciplines earlier and prepare their work for conversations beyond a showcase or portfolio. For brands and industry participants, the opportunity is equally practical. Emerging IP can offer original stories, distinctive visual languages and new ways to engage audiences. Productive collaborations begin with a clear fit between the creator’s intent, the partner’s objectives and the agreed scope of use.

For business owners, emerging design IP can be a practical source of differentiation, not just decoration. A distinctive character, story or visual world can open possibilities for new products, limited editions, campaigns, content and customer experiences. It can also give brands a way to test fresh ideas, engage relevant communities and add a distinctive creative layer to an existing offer.

Design WAH! helps businesses assess these opportunities more clearly by bringing the creator’s intent, audience, core assets and possible applications into a commercial context. This gives brands, licensors and buyers a clearer basis for evaluating brand fit, usage rights, production feasibility and collaboration scope before committing resources. The aim is to create value for both sides: new commercial possibilities for businesses and more sustainable pathways for creators. Explore the 2026 exhibitors at designwah.sg.

Although the 2026 exhibition has concluded, the participating profiles remain available through the Design WAH! website. Businesses looking for original IP for future products, campaigns, content or experiences can continue exploring the creators and school showcases represented in this year’s edition.
