In celebration of its 33rd year in the power industry, Alsons Power Group, the power generation arm of the Mindanao-based Alcantara Group, launched its first-ever “We Power with Care Day,” on July 11, marked by simultaneous environmental and community development activities across the country,&nbsp;reinforcing the Group’s commitment to sustainability and inclusive growth.

The We Power with Care Day mobilized more than 600 individuals, including Alsons Power employees, community members, and local government partners across key sites in Bohol, Iligan, Makati, Negros Occidental, Sarangani, and Zamboanga. The participants took part in tree planting, river and coastal cleanups, and school support programs, bringing to life Group’s brand promise, “We Power with Care.”

From Luzon to Mindanao, various activities took place across the Alsons Power’s project and business units:

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Mapalad Power Corporation (MPC)&nbsp;in&nbsp;Ubay, Bohol&nbsp;planted&nbsp;150 tree seedlings&nbsp;within the plant premises with the help of 100 employees and volunteers from the community and government, supporting&nbsp;reforestation and biodiversity conservation&nbsp;in the area.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In&nbsp;Iligan,&nbsp;Alsons Power Supply Corporation (APSC)&nbsp;and&nbsp;MPC Iligan&nbsp;spearheaded a&nbsp;coastal cleanup&nbsp;at Centennial Park in Dalipuga, collecting&nbsp;110 kilos of recycleable and non-biodegradable waste&nbsp;and mobilizing&nbsp;over 75&nbsp;volunteers.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Siayan-Zambo River Power Corporation (SZPC)&nbsp;conducted a&nbsp;tree planting activity&nbsp;in Barangay Poblacion, Siayan, Zamboanga del Norte, planting&nbsp;120 narra&nbsp;trees&nbsp;with the support of&nbsp;100 volunteers.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The Group’s&nbsp;Makati team&nbsp;helped green&nbsp;La Mesa Eco Park&nbsp;through a&nbsp;tree planting activity&nbsp;involving&nbsp;over 32 employees&nbsp;and&nbsp;150 seedlings.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In&nbsp;Sarangani,&nbsp;Sarangani Energy Corporation (SEC)&nbsp;and&nbsp;Siguil Hydro Corporation&nbsp;brought the spirit of “We Power with Care” to schools by turning over&nbsp;Smart TVs, school bags, and supplies to more than 500 students&nbsp;from nearby schools. A&nbsp;special book reading session&nbsp;was also held.&nbsp;Earlier that day, employees from both plants also participated in a tree planting activity within the SEC premises as part of the celebration.

Aside from education and environmental activities, Alsons Power also turned over the community share of the Municipality of Maasim and Barangay Kamanga from the SEC, reinforcing the Group’s commitment to inclusive growth and sustainable development. The community share forms part of the Department of Energy’s Energy Regulation ER 1-94 program, which requires energy companies to allocate funds to support local communities. These funds can be used for infrastructure, livelihood, and other local development initiatives.

Under the Energy Regulations (ER) 1-94 program of the Department of Energy, host communities of power generation facilities are entitled to financial benefits to fund electrification, livelihood, health, and environmental projects.

These efforts reinforced Alsons Power’s commitment to its brand promise, “We Power with Care,” highlighting the Group’s broader push to integrate sustainability into its operations and uplift the communities it serves.

Alsons Power Celebrates 33 years with Nationwide Environmental and Community Initiatives

MANDALUYONG CITY, Manila – Changemakers from various backgrounds and sectors gathered at Impact Happy Hours last July 2, at Refinery, Shangri-La Plaza Mall. The event has been running since 2017 and has been a community space for individuals and organizations interested in social impact to connect and collaborate. Impact Happy Hours’ main organizers are entrepreneur support organizations Villgro Philippines, xchange, and Ashoka Philippines, but the event has also been co-hosted with different partner organizations who have designed several ways to facilitate connections between attendees. The featured partner of last night’s event was the Good Start Challenge.

Attendees of Impact Happy Hours were invited to reflect on modern parenting, wellbeing, and caregiving within the family. “How difficult is it to get on a crowded city bus with a baby—and how many other challenges do parents face in daily life? We need to ask: can we redesign systems, services, and infrastructures for the wellbeing of parents and caregivers?” said Kathy Nothstine from Challenge Works, one of the implementing partners of the Good Start Challenge.

“We’re excited about the huge opportunities in the Philippines—especially with the growing digital economy, the rise of technology and innovation, and the potential to tap into indigenous solutions that can create more sustainable, lasting impact. At the same time, we are aware of the complex challenges Filipino parents face—from the increasing risks of climate-related disasters to high rates of teenage pregnancy—issues that disproportionately affect women and families in vulnerable communities,” Kathy added, highlighting why the Philippines is one of the eligible countries for the challenge.

The Good Start Challenge will support up to 22 finalists globally to develop their solution with €50,000 in funding and a package of non-financial support. Organizations that are addressing the wellbeing of caregivers from pregnancy and the first years of parenthood, are meeting the needs of underserved and marginalized communities, and have demonstrated effectiveness and are ready to take the next steps towards scaling are invited to apply.&nbsp;

At the end, up to six winners will receive €200,000 and the opportunity to showcase in front of prospective funders and partners. “Aside from the lack of opportunities and education, one thing that I wanted to emphasize is that a lot of moms already have access to equipment and the experience but they lack the confidence,” said MK Bertulfo of FH Moms, speaking on the barriers women face.

Adding to the discussion on maternal challenges and care systems, Nadine Angelica Gadia Casiño of ALIMA Mother Support Center shared, “There are daycare centers, there are schools, but where are the spaces for moms?”

“We partnered with local government units to establish the first-ever city human milk bank and lactation support center—not just a pasteurizing facility, but a space where mothers receive skilled, individualized breastfeeding support… If we can create more breastfeeding clinics and mother support centers, then mothers will know where to go and I think collaboration is key for us to make that happen.”

The panelists’ stories and perspectives offered a glimpse into what’s possible when community-led solutions are given the support to grow. These served as a call to action for entrepreneurs with bold ideas to join the Good Start Challenge and scale their impact for parents and caregivers who need it most.

Changemakers gather at Impact Happy Hours to discuss the wellbeing of Filipino parents and families.

Calbayog City, Philippines – IUX, a global digital trading service, proudly announces the positive impact of its latest Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative in partnership with SOS Children’s Villages Pilipinas. As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainable community development, IUX’s recent donation is bringing hope and tangible change to underprivileged children and youth in Calbayog City, Philippines.

The collaboration, under the project titled “Giving Hope a Chance – A Partnership for the Filipino Children and Youth”, has already produced significant outcomes, particularly in education and youth development. IUX’s grant has provided critical resources such as school supplies, tutorial support, and essential academic materials, directly benefiting children residing in SOS family houses.

Children like Katarina from the Oiestien family house, who dreams of becoming a teacher, and Jared from the Sebjourn family house, who aspires to be an architect, are flourishing thanks to the sustained educational support. Their academic progress, alongside their siblings and peers, is a testament to the power of collective action. “I love learning and helping my siblings with their homework. My dream is to become a teacher and help others learn,” Katarina shared, reflecting the transformative potential of the initiative.

Beyond education, IUX’s donation has fueled key developmental activities. During National Children’s Month 2024, SOS Children’s Village Calbayog hosted an array of enriching programs promoting child protection, health awareness, and personal growth.

IUX’s contribution also bolstered career development for the Family Strengthening Program (FSP) STEAM students through specialized training on resume writing, career mapping, and interview preparation. Additionally, financial literacy sessions have equipped senior high school and college students with essential money management skills, reinforcing IUX’s mission to empower youth with tools for long-term success.

From Childhood Dream to Grown-up Tales: SM Book Nook’s First-Ever Reading Festival

How do we build our youth’s literacy and reading comprehension?

Publishing house Bookshelf PH recently partnered with Project Dionysus and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Marikina Mini Library this year by donating some of its in-house books by inspiring Filipino authors. As part of community development, this collaboration enriches the youth’s exposure to reading, providing them with an after-school activity to expand their reading comprehension and explore diverse genres of books beyond the classroom.

The donation of books also supports the thesis film by a group of dedicated undergraduate theater students from the Department of Performing Arts at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) called Project Dionysus.&nbsp;

“Our book donation hopes to give the students of PUP a new set of reads, and at the same time, serve as a donation drive to support Project Dionysus’ thesis film,” Michelle Dulinayan, Marketing Manager of Bookshelf said.

Their thesis on Streetlight Manifesto by Mixkaela Villalon revolves around a streetlamp being the only witness of two hired hitmen’s rendezvous every night who are responsible for Manila murders. Every day, a dead body shows up at that same streetlight. The search for truth ensues as the cases remain unsolved while the body count rises. Directed by Jetro Sebastian Tino, it reveals the creativity and wisdom that these students have accumulated over the years.

Bookshelf PH donated books to SK Marikina Mini Library in Barangay Jesus dela Peña. With the help of SK Chairwoman Joana Marie Dela Paz, SK Secretary Joselle Manglicmot, and SK Kagawads: Seth Nicole Torres, Nica Joy De Leon, Jonahr Eiz Dela Paz, Jean Hershey Reyes, Kevin Christian Tapel, the books were received by SK Kgds Johana Mae Damole and Rico Miguel Esteban, and SK Treasurer Ana Coleen de Asis.&nbsp;

Monette Quiogue, Co-founder of Bookshelf PH, also met Barangay Captain Rosette Sarmiento to discuss how Filipino-authored books can be more accessible in such communities.

“We want to encourage our youth to read more books and be inspired to explore genres written by local talent,” Quiogue said. “That way, we’re not just enriching their literacy at an early age, we’re also encouraging them to dream and feel represented in the books they read.”

The first renewed their commitment to the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.britishschoolmanila.org/beyond-the-classroom/bsm-taguig-scholarship-programme" target="_blank">BSM Taguig Scholarship Programme</a>, a partnership with The Department of Education Schools Division Office of Taguig and Pateros (DepEd Taguig-Pateros). Pursuing the non-profit international school’s Mission and Vision, the BSM Taguig Scholarship Programme, now in its 19th year, aims to support academically excellent Taguig high school students in obtaining higher education from the very best schools in Metro Manila, with the goal of addressing the limited choice and opportunities that scholars experience due to financial hardship.

The second, a tripartite memorandum of agreement between the British School Manila, DepEd Taguig-Pateros and World Vision Development Foundation, will see the school commit funding, guidance and student and teacher participation to Project RAISE - “Reading Activities to Improve and Shore Education”.

As gleaned from the 2019 National Assessment Rapid Literacy, there are still many early-grade learners struggling to meet the learning standards in early literacy and numeracy and many Elementary and High school learners are still deficient in literacy skills in languages and content. Furthermore, it identified that low achievement levels in English, Math, and Science appear to be caused by learners reading comprehension gaps. As Math and Science word problems are sometimes written in English, this means that there are many low-performing learners who could not understand the question and were therefore unable to demonstrate their knowledge in these content areas.

It is hoped that Project RAISE will support reading remediation activities to improve student’s reading level in Taguig schools and help to close these gaps., Martin van der Linde, Head of School at British School Manila commented “We are immensely proud to partner with Department of Education Taguig-Pateros and World Vision on such an important project and will continually seek further opportunities to collaborate with partners in support of community upliftment.”&nbsp;&nbsp;
